In this official military ID, from 1943, Doyle E. McLaughlin is a 2nd Lt and listed as "PILOT."  At 5'6" tall, men of his modest stature and weight were often desired in the Air Force as flying personnel.  Men often trained together, as in this "43rd Fighter Squadron Class 43C" cohort , but would often be deployed far apart: 2nd Lt. McLaughlin ended up serving in Europe, in the 92nd Troop Carrier Squadron, 493rd Troop Carrier Wing, far from Irving Degon in the CBI.
